"Now, three years on, the garden has matured beautifully and we can only praise Christine's knowledge, skill and professionalism for creating and managing this project for us. Our garden is much admired by all who see it, and we enjoy spending time in it when we can."

Christine Whatley was asked to create a garden incorporating water for a couple in Hampshire. They had lived at the property for some years and had successfully created a garden they enjoyed at the side, but had remained unsure how to tackle the more awkward areas of the garden.

The house needed a welcoming entrance, whilst at the rear the garden was an awkward shape with an overbearing conifer hedge that crowded access to the pleasant side garden. The clients wanted somewhere to sit at the back of the house, and needed a garden that would entice them to spend time there.

The solution at the back was first to cut back the lower part of the hedge and add a fence below, gaining nearly 2m of garden! Having opened the space up, there was scope for a stunning pond abutting a generous new terrace framed by a simple arbor. A circular deck appears to float over the pond, providing a relaxed seating area and a view through to the side garden, where space for a bench to catch the morning sun and gravel planting now enhance the owners' pride and joy, a Magnolia.

At the front, Christine softened the entrance with planting beds either side of a much more inviting path and greeting area.

The planting had previously been dominated by shrubs, which had become tired with age. The new planting, including grasses and richly coloured flowering perennials, introduced vibrancy and seasonal change.

The focus of the garden is the pond, designed with strong architectural lines to create formality whilst native plants placed on shallow shelves create an ideal wildlife haven. The client stocked the pond with native fish, and soon became the proud owner of numerous baby sticklebacks.

Lighting completes the garden. Arbour lights make evening dining a pleasure, whilst moonlighting above the deck creates a gentle ambience with lights below the deck skimming the surface of the pond.
