March flower – Bee friendly and Azure blue

Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ is a form of Lungwort with sparkling blue flowers from as early as February. Unlike many Pulmonarias, Blue Ensign does not have silver markings on the leaves but in my view it more than makes up for this by the sheer brilliance of the true blue flowers which open well before most others. As a nectar rich flower it is invaluable to bees emerging on sunny days to search out rare early food sources.
Blue Ensign looks superb with magenta pinks such as Heathers or Hebe ‘Red Edge’ or with lime green Euphorbia bracts, and makes a striking contrast with rich yellow Daffodils.
